At 3D Concrete, we have reached a new milestone in the application of our concrete 3D printing technology. In partnership with the Montpellier-based startup LineUp Ocean, we recently inaugurated the first wave attenuator modules printed in 3D concrete. This collaboration highlights our commitment to innovation and sustainability in the environmental sector.

Project development

The project began with a rigorous design phase, where LineUp Ocean provided a specification based on years of research. The challenge was substantial: to create a complex and dimensionally imposing structure that meets technical requirements while being ecologically responsible.

The upblocks ©

The modules, nicknamed "upblocks," are the first of their kind worldwide. They combine bio-inspired design with technical efficiency to attenuate wave energy and promote marine biodiversity. Each upblock is designed to function both as a protective barrier against erosion and as a habitat for marine species, promoting natural beach renourishment.

Impacts and benefits

In addition to their primary function, these structures represent an advance in the use of sustainable materials. For this application, 50% of the sand used in concrete will be substituted with recycled oyster shells, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of production. Their installation is also designed to minimize impact on the marine environment.

Conclusion

These wave attenuator modules are a real technical achievement in the concrete 3D printing sector and represent a step forward in coastal conservation. We are committed to continuing this path of innovation by exploring new applications for our concrete 3D printing technology and collaborating with other stakeholders who share our vision of a sustainable future.
