A symbolic project on an iconic site
In Albertville, host city of the 1992 Winter Olympics, 3D Concrete was honored to produce tailor-made 3D concrete lettering. The installation was placed at the foot of the Olympic mast, located on the former Ceremonies Theatre. This emblematic spot, still full of emotion for both residents and visitors, is a key landmark in Albertville’s urban landscape. It embodies the history of a global event and the cultural dynamism that the city continues to cultivate today.
Between technical innovation and historical memory
In this context, designing urban lettering could not be reduced to mere visual signage. The goal was to create an installation worthy of the site: legible, durable, and respectful of its symbolism. Thanks to additive technology and our expertise in concrete extrusion, we produced robust and precise 3D concrete lettering, engineered to last over time and withstand local climatic conditions.
A creation enriched with metal elements
This project has a distinctive feature: the integration of metal sculptures within the lettering. Two elements were added to the structure:
– a stylized Olympic flame, a direct tribute to the Games;
– and a small childlike silhouette, drawn from the visual motifs of the official 1992 mascot (Magique), evoking enthusiasm, innocence, and universality of the event.
These components help create an expressive, timeless artwork.
Custom 3D concrete printing
For this project, we employed our custom 3D concrete printing system, capable of extruding concrete with a high level of precision. This innovative approach eliminates traditional formwork constraints, while offering new possibilities for customization. The lettering was specifically engineered for its site — in its proportions and ground anchoring — ensuring perfect integration into the public space.
A meaningful project with identity
This lettering is more than signage: it contributes to valorizing shared heritage. Installed in a passage area, at the intersection of history and modernity, it invites remembrance, but also projection. It becomes a landmark, a photo opportunity, a stopover, and a support for local pride. Such realizations reflect the growing interest of municipalities for solutions that are aesthetic, technical, and sustainable, made possible by concrete 3D printing.
